apocarpous gynoecium

In an apocarpous (choricarpous) gynoecium, the carpels are free (not fused): a flower has either only 1-leaved ovary (e. g. in Consolida – Knight's-spur) or several free carpels that develop to independently dispersed diaspores (e. g. in Geum urbanum – Wood Avens) (cf. also coenocarpous gynoecium).
