glume

The term 'glumes' refers to 2 husk-like bracts at the base of the spikelets in the Poaceae – Grass family (e. g. in Avena – Oat). Rarely, only 1 glume is developed (e. g. in Lolium – Ryegrass). The lower glume is considered as a supporting-leaf of the spikelets, while the upper glume is interpreted as an addorsed prophyll of the spikelets-axis.
