Capsules are dehiscent fruits that develop from several carpels and open at fruit maturity to release the seeds. Depending on their dehiscent mechanisms, schizocarpous capsules (e. g. in Epilobium – Willowherb), lid capsules (e. g. in Anagallis – Pimpernel) and poricidal capsules (e. g. in Papaver – Poppy) may be distinguished.
